The clash on 7 December follow a month of meetings, rallies and demonstrations across the French Pacific dependency of New Caledonia. The protests were called by the ‘Usine du Sud = Usine pays’ collective, which unites customary chiefs, environment groups, trade unionists and members of the independence coalition Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS).

The funds will be used to address two of the University’s priorities – recruiting top prospective students and increasing access and affordability for undergraduates. This new investment provides additional institutional funds that will match private gifts supporting three scholarship programs – Bicentennial Scholarships, Blue Ridge Scholars and University Achievement Awards. “Since late 2016, our alumni and friends have generously endowed 350 different scholarship funds through this program,” UVA President Jim Ryan said. “This new commitment will allow us to continue to recruit undergraduate students with exceptional promise who might not otherwise attend UVA.”
