Malicious cyber actors will exploit any vulnerabilities, and modernizing and continuously improving our cyber defenses is in the interest of every citizen, company, and government. The Biden Administration has released an Executive Order that reflects lessons learned from recent cyber incidents and sets into motion the steps necessary to modernize federal cyber defenses and prevent cyber intrusions,
The term “National Security Industrial Base” (NSIB) appeared in the 2018
National Security Strategy. The NSIB is the “network of knowledge, capabilities, and people including academia, National Laboratories, and the private sector that turns ideas into innovations [and] transforms discoveries into successful commercial products.” This report outlines elements of the NSIB and how a commercially driven innovation differs from a defense-centric approach to technology. The U.S. innovation ecosystem is based on a mix of strong research universities, flexible financial systems, a competitive business focus, and risk-taking, entrepreneurial culture that is skilled at commercializing research. Other countries have similar strengths, but not at the same scale.

The cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline spurred a clear message from the White House Monday that the onus lies with critical infrastructure owners and operators to secure their own networks. That leaves some demanding more from government to deter cybercriminals by placing increased pressure upon nations that choose to harbour the attackers.
DarkSide, the affiliate ransomware that caused the Colonial Pipeline to pause operations over the weekend, is run out of Russia, a nation long known to protect cybercriminals within its borders from international investigation and extradition. As the pipeline mitigates the attack, and the United States mulls policy solutions for ransomware, the Biden Administration will have to answer an immediately important question:
Cyberattack Shuts Down Colonial Pipeline, Threatens To Raise Gas Prices
A cyber ransomware attack crippled the nation’s largest pipeline on the East Coast which now threatens to raise gas prices while exposing vulnerabilities in critical U.S. infrastructure.
Colonial Pipeline Co, which runs a 5,500-mile pipeline from Linden, N.J., to the Gulf Coast at Houston, Texas revealed in a press release Monday its four primary lines remain offline after corporate computer systems had been compromised.
“We are in the process of restoring service to other laterals and will bring our full system back online only when we believe it is safe to do so,” the company said, as smaller lateral lines begin to restart operations.
