For Massachusetts auto magnate Ernie Boch Jr., 2021 has gotten off to a charitable start.
The businessman-philanthropist, who has in years past been named one of the top 50 richest people in the state, is credited with handing out six $2,021 tips to servers at half a dozen restaurants in Boston this week, news outlets reported.
The cash was left in mysterious envelopes with the car dealer’s well-known name written on them. The words “thank you” were also included, WHDH reported.
“It was so dead that I had this idea, why don’t I go into Boston and hit all these different bars and give some support,” Boch told the news outlet.
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, restaurant owners have made the hard decision to either close their business or remain open and hope that takeout and indoor dining get them through the colder months.
But in late fall, a third option emerged: hibernating, which entails temporarily closing a restaurant with the hope of reopening when the weather is warmer or the world is safer.
Emory “Andy” Kilgore, whose downtown restaurant, The Emory, is closed but hopes to reopen in the spring, told Boston.com in October that he didn’t have a choice.

Raleigh, N.C. Three Glenwood South bars will close their doors for the next several months due to coronavirus and new state-implemented restrictions.
Alchemy and Cornerstone Tavern will remain closed until March 1, 2021, according to a Facebook post published Wednesday night.
The Village, which has the same ownership group, has also closed.
The bars cited a rise in coronavirus cases, cold outdoor weather and a new statewide curfew for the three-month closure, saying the three factors create an environment where we can no longer provide the nightlife experience you have come to know and enjoy.
