The arts commissioner Humphrey Burton in the 1970s

Humphrey Burton was, for the last half of the 20th century, one of the most influential figures in arts broadcasting. During the 1960s, he worked on the flagship BBC show Monitor under Huw Wheldon, and as Head of Music and Arts at the Corporation masterminded two institutions: Young Musician of the Year and documentary strand Arena, which are both still with us today. His friendships and connections are various, with Leonard Bernstein a consistent presence. “I was Boswell to his Johnson,” he tells me.
The question I pose to Burton, now 90, is what he thinks of the BBC’s arts coverage today. With BBC Four becoming an archival channel, and the future of culture not quite fully assured under Patrick Holland on BBC Two, it seems that Burton had the best years.
