Dr. Mark Gonyea is elated about the chance to open a new school and work with a team of dedicated educators and staff members to establish a culture to best serve students.
He’ll get the opportunity as the first principal of Plainview Elementary School, the newest Rutherford County school set to open in August 2021. Director of Schools Bill Spurlock made the hiring announcement today.
“Dr. Gonyea is a strong instructional leader and has the ability to build instructional capacity throughout his faculty,” Director Spurlock said. “He is the ideal administrator to launch our next school.”

(MURFREESBORO) Murfreesboro City Schools Director of Communications Lisa Trail told WGNS News that due to the growing number of COVID cases in Murfreesboro, for the first three weeks of January, Murfreesboro City Schools will reopen in an A/B Hybrid model based on the first letter of the student’s last name. She and Interim Director Ralph Ringstaff will give details and talk with parents on WGNS Action Line radio broadcast this Monday morning from 8:10-9:00AM.
She noted that students with different last names but living in the same household will be accommodated. Trail suggested that parents contact the school principal if you have name concerns.

(Murfreesboro, TN) The City Schools Foundation will distribute over $38,000 in grants to Murfreesboro City School teachers in 2020. The Foundation asks educators to submit proposals for funding that will help acquire resources for classrooms not ordinarily provided by taxpayer dollars.
“Reading and scoring the grants is one of the most rewarding jobs as a foundation board member,” says David Scott, grant committee chair. “It is remarkable to see how educators are utilizing these grant dollars to enrich the classroom.”
Grants are submitted anonymously and are judged solely on their merit by a committee.
Murfreesboro City Schools on Asynchronous Learning Days Schedule Dec 15, 2020 at 11:59 am by WGNS
Murfreesboro City Schools transitioned to asynchronous learning days Monday, December 14th and will remain on the new schedule through Friday, December 18th.
Asynchronous learning means that instruction does not have to occur at the same time and allows parents and students flexibility in the school day.
Assignments for the week are being sent home with students, as of Friday, December 11th. Work was also made available for parent pick-up this past Monday, December 14th.
Student attendance will be taken daily by Class Dojo or another form of teacher communication. The Murfreesboro Extended School Program (ESP) will remain open from 6 a.m. through 6 p.m. daily.
