Editorial: Taking Flight With An Eagle, 2 Birdies

Eagle, by Susan Bellew, who is retiring after 22 years as the first and only executive director of Family Promise, which offers shelter for women and their children who have nowhere else to turn. The nonprofit was begun with a mission to serve local homeless families and was pulled together by area churches. Family Promise followed the national model of using local participating churches to provide overnight lodging and a day center where clients could be assisted with referrals to social service agencies for many years. In 2016, under Bellew’s leadership, Family Promise of Moore County purchased a 3,500-square-foot house in Aberdeen. The organization now operates from this single location where women and children without a home of their own can find shelter, support and assistance to help them achieve independent living.

History Curriculum Changes Trigger School Board Review

New statewide social studies standards aimed at incorporating the experiences of minorities and marginalized groups throughout history have some Moore County school board members asking whether or not individual districts can opt out or delay the implementation of state-set curriculum. The State Board of Education approved those new standards in a 7-5 vote in February, effectively setting new guidelines for how the subject is addressed in kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms around the state. The new standards have been nearly two years in the making and are timed along with a realignment of social studies courses on the high school level. Graduation requirements for students starting ninth grade in 2021 will include one American history course instead of two, making room for a new course in economics and personal finance as directed by the legislature. World history and a retitled civic literacy course will remain requirements.

People of the Pines: The Pilot s 20 Under 40

The Pilot asked our readers to help us find young professionals deserving of this award through an open nominations phase in January and February of this year. We received over 170 nominations identifying 120 candidates. An independent panel of judges comprised of Moore County business and community leaders evaluated the nominees based solely on the information that was provided in the nomination. They were specifically looking for professional success, proven leadership skills and a résumé of community service. Likely, you will see familiar faces. Maybe, you’ll find your next realtor, physician or financial advisor. While only 20 people could be chosen for this honor, it is very clear that Moore County is rich with hard-working and determined young professionals. We wish we could honor all 120 candidates today, but we’ll have to wait until next year to meet more of these capable young people who live and work among us.
