Many political analysts are of the opinion that the biggest threat to democracy in Nigeria is not its peaceful protestors, insurgents, bandits or even separatists, but rather its legislators.
Having allocated themselves a disproportionate share of the nation’s budget, they “live large”, habitually fail to meet the stipulated number of sitting days, fail in oversight functions, fail to constrain executive unconstitutionalities, and always place their personal interests above those of their constituents.
The Senate recently voted in favour of a new Electoral Bill which goes totally against the grain of democracy. Quite appallingly, they seek to undermine the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and place obstacles in the path of free and fair elections. Vigilance must be in motion to ensure that Legislatures delivers on their constitutional mandates and terms of engagement with the electorate. Every Legislatures and Legislative houses must be kept on their toes to ensure they give quality representation to the electorates.
We should no longer be contented with criticisms of their failures and consequently of government on the media alone. Henceforth, Nigerians must be ginger to demand quality representation from their Legislatures and accountability from their Government, this should be our collective responsibility.

Beyond all reasonable doubt, Lauretta Onochie, senior special assistant (New Media) to President Muhammadu Buhari since October 2016 should never have been nominated at all as a commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It is just as well that the Senate has rejected Onochie’s nomination. The Constitution, in the Third Schedule, Part1 (F) (14(1) (b) requires a member of the commission to “be non-partisan and a person of unquestionable integrity.” This is a weighty consideration incompatible with desperation, which is never in the character of an integrated person. Onochie’s candidacy was simply a misnomination.
