The Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging has joined the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
Through the program eligible Seniors can receive vouchers valued at $24 for individuals or $48 for couples to be used to purchase fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets through November. Applications are available at the JCAAA main office, senior centers, and online at jcaaa.org. Application swill be accepted now through September 15.
Eligible seniors live in Jefferson County, will be 60 or older by the end of the year and meet annual income requirements. Individual income limit is $23,828 and the limit for couples is $32,227. Individuals are not eligible if they reside in a nursing home, convent, or other residential facility where meals are provided.

Salmon Creek Farmers’ Market opens June 8

The Salmon Creek Farmers’ Market will open June 8 in a new location: the southeast side of Kaiser Permanente Salmon Creek Medical Office’s parking lot at 14406 N.E. 20th Ave.
It will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday through Oct. 5.
The market offers locally grown produce, flowers, honey, baked goods and processed foods such as fruit juices, nuts and nut butters. The market accepts SNAP and offers an up-to $40 Market Match to be used on fruits, vegetables, edible plants, mushrooms and herbs. Both WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks are also accepted by most of the growers.
