Myanmar Crisis: Old habits die hard

10 mins read Using election fraud as a pretext, general Min Aung Hlaing has decided to take over Burma thanks to a rather vague interpretation of the 2008 constitution. What happened to lead to these events? Myanmar (also known as Burma) is a former British colony that obtained its independence in 1948. From 1962 to 2011 the country was governed by an oppressive military junta. In 1990, the government held free elections that were won by the National League for Democracy – Aung San Suu Kyi’s party – with 80% of the seats in parliament (i.e 392 out of 492 seats). However, it was too good to be true and the military junta refused to leave and therefore continued to rule the nation since its dissolution in 2011.

The party actually improved on its impressive 2015 showing at the polls, gaining well over four-fifths of the seats it ran for allowing it to form a government on its own. (The Burmese Constitution, written in 2008 by the generals, reserves a quarter of the seats in each assembly to the armed forces.) The NLD won 920 (or 82%) of the 1,117 seats it contested, adding a total of 61 seats. The main opposition party, the military-affiliated Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), won only 71 seats, 46 fewer than in 2015.

The banks are closed, government offices empty and the country’s fuel supplies running dangerously low. Hospitals, universities and schools are mostly closed and most factories have also been idle. Meanwhile, the military is sticking to its battle plans and preparing to crush the protest movement. The security forces have put up barricades and blockades across strategic roads and thoroughfares in many of Myanmar’s prominent cities to enable better crowd control and dispersal. Greater n
