Removed Henderson County DA now working in in indigent criminal defense

One month after Greg Newman was removed from office as district attorney in a rare court proceeding, he has been approved to work in Asheville and Buncombe County as a defense attorney for indigent clients – those who have been accused of a crime and can’t afford a private lawyer. Buncombe County Chief Public Defender Sam Snead on May 24 approved Newman to be placed on a list of attorneys who serve as court-appointed counsel for indigent people. These lawyers are paid by the state’s Office of Indigent Defense Services to represent those accused of crimes but the public defender’s office has a conflict and cannot take their cases, or is too overburdened to take a case, Snead said.

Man found guilty of Brunswick child sex crimes sentenced

A Brunswick County man was convicted of several rape, sex offense and incest charges Tuesday afternoon. A Brunswick County jury found John Christian Marston guilty of sexually abusing a young girl in a trial that began May 24, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release. The abuse started when the victim was 10 years old and continued for several years. Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jason C. Disbrow sentenced Marston up to 147 years in prison. The Brunswick District Attorney s Office and the Brunswick County Sheriff s Office was not immediately available for comment.
