A police officer digging into automatic gunfire reports from residents came agonisingly close to discovering gunman Ricky Maddisonâs hideout before he killed Senior Constable Brett Forte.
A neighbour told investigating officer Brad Smart the sound of automatic gunfire was coming from the property next door, but when police checked who owned the property, they only found records for the family of Maddisonâs friend, Adam Byatt.
