An Aboriginal activist dedicated to cultural independence and education, and an advocate for migrant and refugee women are among those who have been named the 2021 Australians of the Year.
Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, 73, and Rosemary Kariuki, 60, were awarded this year s Senior Australian of the Year and Local Hero awards at a ceremony in Canberra on Monday night.
Grace Tame, a 26-year-old sexual assault survivor and advocate, was named Australian of the Year, becoming the first Tasmanian to do so in the program s 61-year history.
Isobel Marshall, a 22-year-old social entrepreneur helping women access personal hygiene products, rounded out the all-women slate of recipients as Young Australian of the Year.

The peak body for older Australians, Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia, congratulates the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year, Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, who received the honour in recognition of her exceptional work as an Aboriginal activist, educator, and artist.
Ian Yates AM, Chief Executive of COTA Australia, says the impact of Dr Miriam-Rose’s work will be felt for many years to come as she has worked tirelessly to empower Indigenous youth through education about their culture.
“Dr Miriam-Rose has worked tirelessly to connect Aboriginal children with the culture and land to which they belong.”
Grace Tame, who helped lead the fight to overturn a law preventing sexual assault survivors from speaking out, is named the Australian of the Year for 2021.

The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) congratulates Australia’s Local Hero, Rosemary Kariuki, Young Australian of the Year, Isobel Marshall, Senior Australian of the Year, Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, and Australian of the Year, Grace Tame.
“We are inspired by the stories of all the finalists and the contribution they have made at a local, national and international level,” Australian College of Nursing Acting Chief Executive Officer, Neil Haynes FCA FACN (Hon) said.
“After a year which has seen immense challenges, it is fabulous to recognise the achievements of so many wonderful nominees in supporting their community,” Mr Haynes said.
