Nigeriaâs senior men and womenâs basketball teams due to depart from Tokyo Japan on Monday from their training base in USA have been saved the embarrassment of competing at the Olympic Games with old kits.
After several months that sportswear and equipment donated to the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) by its China-based sponsors arrived Apapa port in Lagos, the items have finally been cleared and now in custody of officials of the federation.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dareâs intervention secured the release of the basketball kits to the NBBF from Apapa wharf.
Dare had taken the matter to the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and as well as the Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Service, asking for waiver to clear the items meant for athletes on national duties.

TheCable reported that the kits shipped into the country by Peak, Nigerian basketball teams kits sponsor, are being delayed at the seaport.
Babs Ogunade, a board member of NBBF, said the delay in getting the kits out of the port is due to “a lack of documentation and miscommunication between the ministry of finance and the ministry of sports”.

Musa Kida, NBBF’s president, was quoted as saying the sports ministry is communicating with the finance ministry to sort out the bottleneck.
“The FG is aware of the situation, and they have stepped in and are in discussions with the relevant bodies,” he was quoted as saying.
The leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) is optimistic that the DâTigers jerseys at the seaport in Lagos will be cleared before the commencement of the Olympics.
Reacting to a recent media report, the federationâs President, Musa Kida said that all hands are on deck over the clearance of the kits from its sponsor-Peak.
âThe Federal Ministry of Sports is aware of the situation and they have stepped in and are in discussions with the relevant bodies.â
âI can assure you that the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honourable Sunday Dare is in discussion with the Ministry of the Finance who is in charge of such waiver on Customs duties.â
