LOVEBIRDS intending to go to Thailand via Kangar, Perlis, to tie the knot had their plans halted by the movement control order this year, causing 70% drop in couples solemnising their union there, Utusan Malaysia reported.
According to Perlis religious affairs committee chairman Ruzaini Rais, 1,825 couples headed to Thailand to get married since 2010, but the MCO dashed their plans this year.
Ruzaini said about 70% of couples went to Thailand because one of them wished to take on another spouse while about 26% of couples fled to the neighbouring country because their families disagreed with their union.
