Minister Podgoršek
We look forward to the fourth celebration of World Bee Day. On the initiative of the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, the Republic of Slovenia proposed that the United Nations Organisation proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day. The aim of the initiative is to draw the attention of the international public to the importance of bee conservation every year and remind the public that we all depend on bees and other pollinators. What would you like to stress on this year s World Bee Day? What is its motto?
World Bee Day offers the opportunity to think about beekeeping and wild pollinators every year. They are both good indicators of the preservation of our environment. We can be extremely proud in Slovenia to have a great environment for the development and existence of beekeeping. I dare say that environmental pollution is not a significant or major difficulty for the development of beekeeping in Slovenia. The topic of this year s World Bee Day is

State aid rules for agriculture, forestry and rural areas are “broadly fit for purpose” according to an evaluation from the European Commission.
The evalaution concludes that “overall the existing rules work well; are fit for purpose; and meet the needs of the sectors concerned”.
However, the evaluation found that “some targeted adjustment” may be needed to align current rules with EU priorities, including the European Green Deal.
State aid rules for agriculture, in their current form, were extended to December 31, 2022, the commission confirmed last December.
The evaluation was aimed at assessing how the current rules – which have applied since 2014 – have performed across three areas, including: minimising distortions of competition and trade in agriculture and forestry; ensuring the consistency of the agricultural state aid rules with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP); and simplifying procedures.

Direct income support strongly contributes to stabilising farm income, with direct payments, through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and support to areas facing natural constraints playing an important role, according to research carried out by the European Commission.
Market measures, EU quality schemes and various rural development measures contributing to productivity growth, also have a role in supporting farm income by limiting downward price volatility and improving competitiveness.
However, despite a steady and continuous improvement, the income gap between agricultural and non-agricultural income remains considerable.
These are among the key findings from the evaluation of the CAP’s impact on viable food production published by the commission.
The European Commission adopted the EU action plan
Towards zero pollution for air, water and soil on 12 May.
This action plan is part of the European green deal and sets a target of reduced pollution levels, which are no longer harmful to human health and natural ecosystems.
The plan pulls in other European policies, such as the Farm to Fork Strategy, which plans to reduce fertiliser use by 20% and pesticide use by 50%.
It plans to fill gaps in legislation and identify areas where better implementation is needed.
Key targets
The action plan sets out key targets to 2030:
Improving air quality to reduce the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution by 55%.
