A 66-year-old man died Thursday after police said he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on Oak Ridge Turnpike, according to the city.
The Oak Ridge Police Department responded to the crash, which was in front of Oak Ridge High School, at about 6:13 p.m. Thursday. The initial investigation shows that James Lynch lost control of the motorcycle, which then slid on its side for about 50 feet before hitting the back of a small van, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release.
Lynch later died at Methodist Medical Center.
Witnesses told investigators the sun was in Lynch’s eyes. Investigators also believe speed was a factor, the press release said. No use of drugs or alcohol are suspected.

Methodist creates support group to help people dealing with effects of COVID-19

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Over 1,000 people have died from COVID-19 in Shelby County. WMC Action News 5 spoke with one woman who lost her husband to the virus.
She shared her story and the way a support group is helping her grieving family.
“I took him to the ER on Tuesday before Thanksgiving,” said Connie Marshall a COVID-19 survivor. “They thought he would be there a couple of days.”

Covenant Health, the parent company of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, is planning to work with local health departments to provide vaccines to people age 75 and over.
That statement came from Covenant Health Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Debbi Honey during a virtual press conference. She said more information would come out that day, Monday, Jan. 11. However, that information had not come out as of late Monday afternoon. The Oak Ridger will publish the information as it becomes available.
“People see that there’s hope,” Honey said. “The vaccine is our first hope to get out of this.”
