CROWN POINT â Two buildings around the square will soon have minor exterior improvements made.Â
During a recent Crown Point Historic Preservation Commission meeting via Zoom, commissioners heard from two petitioners seeking approval for exterior projects.Â
The first proposal came from Matt Doran, co-owner of True BBQ & Whiskey Bar at 116. N. Main St., seeking to install exterior up lighting. We re having a hard time. It s just so dark in our corner. We don t have any street lighting like some of the other places do in front, it s just dark, Doran said. Our sign doesn t illuminate. So we re just looking to put those thin, long LED strip lights above our awning to shine upward towards our signage.
ST. JOHN â New St. John Fire Chief Kevin LaDuke has worked at fire departments since he was a teen.Â
At about 15 or 16, LaDuke was a fire cadet with the Lakes of the Four Seasons Volunteer Fire Force. Even when he went off to college, LaDuke still volunteered with the force.Â
After earning a degree in biology from Valparaiso University, LaDuke accepted a position as a firefighter/emergency medical technician with the Chesterton Fire Department, where he worked for about six years before accepting a position with the St. John Fire Department in 2012.Â
Previously, LaDuke served on the Lake County Sheriffâs Department SWAT team. He still works at Franciscan Health at the EMS academy and with Northwest Indiana District One.Â
The reorganization of the Illinois House of Representatives under recently elected speaker Chris Welch has led to a new role for State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City.
Jones has been named chair of the House Committee on Insurance, where he plans to focus on expanding telehealth and mental health coverage, and increasing minority leadership in the insurance industry. I am proud to take on the crucial role of leading Illinois ongoing effort to expand access to high-quality, affordable health care, Jones said in a news release. While we have made great strides recently in improving our insurance laws, there is still a lot of work to do, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
