3 ‘Huji men’ held in raid in capital

Police arrested three members of the banned militant group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (Huji) including its operations branch head during a raid at Sayedabad in the capital.
The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted the raid around 5:15pm on Thursday, according to a DMP press release issued yesterday.
The arrestees are Huji Operations Head Mohammad Mainul Islam alias Mahin alias Mithu alias Hasan, Sheikh Sohan Swad alias Boro Abdullah and Murad Hossain Kabir.
One private car, five mobile phones, one microphone, one sharp weapon, two daggers, 10 detonators, 160 bearing iron balls, one scotch tape, five litres of acid, three ID cards, and a book were seized from them.

A former member of radical group Purba Bangla Communist Party was killed in a drive-by shooting Friday night in Phultala, Khulna.
Mollah Hemayet Hossain alias Lipu, 45, was a resident of Tajpur village. He was killed when he was with several other villagers, police said.
He was one of the 35 people, who surrendered to the authorities in the presence of the home minister last year, saying that they were willing to get back to normal life as law abiding citizens.
Police arrested Faruq Hossain, 44, of Phultala, and Murad Hossain, 47, of Narail, also former members of Purba Bangla Communist Party, in connection with the murder, said Mahatab Uddin, officer-in-charge of Phultala Police Station.
