Resident presses Council to reverse support on proposed highway

February 18, 2021   ·   0 Comments By ALYSSA PARKHILL Initiative Reporter Caledon resident and environmentalist Jennifer LeForsetier spoke out to Council on Tuesday night about the implications the proposed Highway 413 will have on the community. Leforestier has been involved with the proposed GTA West Corridor highway since 2014, along with several other community members.  The new 400-series highway is being planned to travel from Milton through Brampton and Caledon until it reaches Vaughan. Talks and plans of the new highway have been around since 2006 until all was halted in 2015 for further review, which later got cancelled by the Liberal government in 2018.  It has since been brought back to life by the current Progressive Conservative government where a preferred route was approved by Queen’s Park this past August. Food club continues to provide healthy meals | Caledon Citizen

February 18, 2021   ·   0 Comments By ALYSSA PARKHILL Initiative Reporter A local program is providing healthy and local meals for students through various programs in the community of Dufferin and Caledon.   The Headwaters Local Food Club is one of the Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance’s (HFFA) Farm to School programs. Parents as well as staff can sign up for a membership which will allow them to receive a “meal-in-a-bag”, which are delivered to the students at their school for them to take home. HFFA is supported through their registered charity, Headwaters Communities in Action.  All meals are locally sourced from different distributors in the Headwaters region. 

Province working to put regions back into framework, lifting business restrictions

February 11, 2021   ·   0 Comments By ALYSSA PARKHILL Initiative Reporter The Province is slowly working towards gradually lifting lockdown measures region by region as numbers continue to remain lower than previous months.  Ontario overall reported 1,022 new COVID-19 cases on February 9, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 280,494.  In known hotspots, 343 cases were reported in Toronto, 128 in York Region and 250 in Peel. Peel Region has now seen a total of 56,979 cases, with 3,139 remaining active, 53,263 now marked as resolved, and a total of 577 deaths.  Though the province has extended the shutdown, which has been in place since December, and the Stay-at-Home order, for the past month, communities will be seeing the colour-coded framework return once restrictions are lifted.

Communities celebrate Black History Month virtually

February 11, 2021   ·   0 Comments by ALYSSA PARKHILL Initiative Reporter Black History Month is being celebrated across the country with the theme “The Future is Now.” “February is Black History Month,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “It is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the many contributions that Black Canadians and their communities have made to this country.” The month is to celebrate the achievements, contributions and the communities of Black Canadians, in both the past and the present. Black History Month was first recognized in Canada in 1979 after the Ontario Black History Society petitioned Toronto to designate February as such. Black History Month was officially recognized in all of Canada in 1995 by the House of Commons. 

Downsizing Diva Dufferin-Caledon taken over by new owner

Lisa took over the ownership of Downsizing Diva Dufferin-Caledon this year after previous owner Brenda Alderdice retired after building a successful business for almost 10 years. Lisa says she was thrilled to purchase an already existing company so the transition could be seamless. She was ready to become a business owner herself and says she welcomes the challenge.  Downsizing Diva was developed by entrepreneurs Gail Shields and Karen Shinn over 25 years ago to help seniors and their families reduce the stress of downsizing and moving. The company began franchising 10 years ago and have franchisees across the GTA with plans to grow across Canada.
