Wanaka skifields are trashing their rubbish bins; this season skiers will have to take their wrappers, food bags and waste off the slopes with them.
There will be recyling and compost bins instead - on Cardrona and Treble Cone - when they open for business next month.
Vistors are also being encouraged to car pool or take a free shuttle up the mountain to cut emissions.
Ewan Mackie is the ops manager for Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone.

Qantas has been a busy bee lately, announcing a spate of new routes, a points deal for ski enthusiasts and a very special lunar-themed scenic flight.
The national carrier will introduce a direct flight between Adelaide and the Gold Coast from 25 June, with promises of additional routes from Adelaide in the coming weeks.
The new routes follow the national carrier’s decision to house five Embraer E190 aircraft in Adelaide in response to a growing demand for both leisure and corporate travel.
The airline said it plans to use the E190 aircraft to begin flying between Darwin and Canberra from 21 June.
Introduction
Being a long way from everywhere else in the Western World, getting to New Zealand can be a mission for anyone who isn’t Australian. The effort is worth it, however, as this nation is home to some of the world’s most dramatic natural scenery. The diversity of biomes found here is truly remarkable, especially when you consider this nation only covers 267,000 square kilometres of land area.
While it is home to one of the world’s youngest human societies (Polynesians only arrived here in the 13th century, followed by Europeans in the 17th century), the culture of the Maori people will only add to what will surely be an epic trip to the Land of Long White Cloud.
I d love to be heading off to admire crocs and Aboriginal rock art in Kakadu in a couple of months. Same goes for cruising the Kimberley coast, bracketed by a few days in Broome and Darwin. Ditto Lord Howe Island in October when the red-tailed tropicbirds are breeding along the cliffs. Governments of all stripes are egging me on and subsidising my travels by way of half-price airfares – but I just can t afford it.
Don t get me wrong, I can do cheap. There s plenty to love about Australia that doesn t involve a deep dive into the piggy bank. A hike in the Blue Mountains with the earth spiralling away at my feet and waterfalls spurting from the escarpment above costs next to nothing. Victoria s Black Spur Drive with a spot of wine tasting in the Yarra Valley – fantastic! I have a covert fascination for cheap motels which is regrettably not shared by my partner but Australia s iconic experiences - the ones that are going to stick in your memory forever – are scaldingly expensive.
