Latest satellite imageries and Ocean Buoy observations indicate that Saturday’s low pressure area, which became well marked over east-central Bay of Bengal in the same evening concentrated into a depression over east-central Bay of Bengal, says a bulletin of India Meteorological department here on Sunday. The system lay-centred at about 560 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 590 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 690 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 670 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), says the bulletin.

According to the Jagatsinghpur Collector, Sangram Keshari Mohapatra, the epicenter of the Cyclone Yass was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, but no tsunami alert was issued. It is expected to make landfall in northern Odisha and Sundarbans, moving north and northwest. The state government has expedited all preparations. Fishermen who have gone fishing to the sea are being brought back, said Mohapatra.

Cyclone Yaas to make landfall in between Sagar Island in Bengal and Paradip in Odisha Kolkata: The Met department on Sunday said that the cyclone Yaas will make landfall in West Bengal with maximum wind-speed of 165kmph. “The Depression over eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of five kmph during the past six hours. 90 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 570 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 650 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal). It is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by May 24 and further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 24 hours and by May 26 evening it will make the landfall between Paradip and Sagar island,” said Sanjib Bandhopadhyay, joint director IMD.
