Several mid-Missouri roadways to receive new surface treatment

BOONE/CALLAWAY COUNTY - A high friction surface treatment will soon be applied to several busy mid-Missouri roadway curves in order to increase motorist safety. A contractor working for MoDOT will begin applying the treatment on Tuesday, May 18, applying the treatment to curves at various locations along both directions of Interstate 70 in Boone and Callaway Counties. Westbound I-70 at the Missouri River Bridge near Rocheport will be the next location to receive the treatment. All work is scheduled to be completed in three weeks, and will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. with intermittent, single-lane closures where crews are operating.

MFA Oil donates land for vandalized church to relocate

TEBBETTS - Plans are underway for Oakley Chapel in Callaway County to move to a new home. This comes after five teenagers vandalized the historically Black church in January.  MFA Oil announced on May 13 it planned to donate a 3-acre plot of land to the chapel. The primary reason for the move is to prevent future acts of vandalism, according to Oakley Chapel Project Manager George Hord.  Where it was at, there were no houses where anyone could really see the church from their house, Hord said. At night there was very little traffic by there, so it was an easy target if you want to call it that.

Work to begin soon on Discovery Parkway extension

COLUMBIA - After more than a decade of planning, work is set to begin on the long-awaited extension of Discovery Parkway that will create a new major thoroughfare in southeast Columbia. Construction is set to begin this spring and will connect Gans Road to the intersection of New Haven and Rolling Hills roads. The parkway now stretches less than a mile from Highway 63 to Gans Road. The extension will go north of the highway and past MU’s South Farm Research Center. The connector “basically completes a link that’s missing between two major freeway interchanges,’’ Community Development Director Tim Teddy said. “For our residents in Old Hawthorne, The Vineyards, The Brooks, which are some of the larger Columbia neighborhoods in that Rolling Hills Road area, it’ll make it a fairly direct route for them to get to Jefferson city via Rolling Hills and Discovery Parkway.”

While the COVID-19 vaccination rollout promises a new beginning, many questions remain among the refugee community in mid-Missouri. “If you get vaccinated…how many do you have to take so that you can be 100% [immune]?” said Mahinga Tubirori, owner of the African Market on Old Highway 63 in Columbia.

MU Health Care to host special vaccination event for teens Monday

COLUMBIA – Following the FDA’s expansion of the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer vaccine to include 12-to-15-year-olds last week, MU Health Care will hold a special vaccination event geared towards this age group Monday.  The Faurot Field vaccination site at the Walsworth Family Columns Club will have a clinic open for adolescents from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.  MU Health Care vaccine co-chair and family medicine physician Dr. Laura Morris said although the event is targeted towards teens, the clinic isn’t limited to that age group. “Our demand from adults has been dropping recently. So, I think that we’ll see a lot of those slots taken by teens,” Dr. Morris said. “But, we’re not excluding others who also want to get a vaccine.”
