New Canaan COVID Update: Uptick in Cases, Upcoming Vaccination Clinics, Community Testing, and More

Written by Kevin Moynihan Positive COVID cases in New Canaan Last week we had an increase in the number of reported positive COVID-19 cases for New Canaan residents with 38. The previous week we had 30.  We’ve had 14 new cases reported this week so far.  With all results back from last week’s three days of community testing at Lapham Center, there were 3 positive cases detected out of 171 residents tested, a 1.75 % positivity rate.  The State of Connecticut s 7-day rolling average positivity rate is currently 3.07%.  For updated information on the weekly cases, by age brackets, visit the red COVID-19 alert box on the town website at www.newcanaan.info. 

Town Seeks Review of Sidewalk Bump-Out Plan on Elm Street

Town officials say they’ve hired a traffic engineer to review a plan to bump out sidewalks on Elm Street. Michael Galante, director of traffic at Norwalk-based Hardesty & Hanover LLC, has been hired “to come out and take a look at Elm Street, review a bump-out plan for us, a sidewalk bump-out plan,” according to Public Works Director Tiger Mann. “He is going to be doing a little bit of traffic study and a little bit of speed study on Elm Street, the main business section,” Mann told members of the Police Commission during their regular meeting, held March 17 via videoconference. “There was a request to have the speed limit dropped there, and then we’d like him to take a look at that. So he will be out there in the next couple of weeks to look at that and then we are hoping to come back to you in April with some findings.”

New Canaan Health Department Moderna Vaccine Clinic on April 8 for Residents 18 and Older Written by HH This morning, Thursday April 1 st First Selectman Kevin Moynihan provided a COVID update reminding residents that today begins the scheduling of residents age 16 and over to register for vaccination appointments in Connecticut. Moynihan said that New Canaan Health Department will be holding a Moderna vaccination clinic next Thursday, April 8 th at the Lapham Community Center  for New Canaan residents only over the age of 18. (Please note that the Moderna vaccine has not been approved by the FDA for those under the age of 18; residents age 16 and 17 should seek vaccination clinics with the Pfizer vaccine).

Williams: Current Police Department Location A Pretty Darn Good Spot

Credit: Michael Dinan In a break from an opinion voiced recently by New Canaan’s highest elected official, Selectmen Nick Williams said Tuesday that the best location for a future police station likely is its current one. Williams said during a regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen, “can’t think of a better location for a Police Department than where it is today.” “You are literally seconds from downtown, you are a minute from three of our schools, and you are close to the Merritt Parkway where a lot of activity takes place,” Williams said of 174 South Ave. said during the meeting, held via videoconference. “It’s not to say that I’m not open to another location. I just think that where it is is a pretty darn good spot.”
