First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu has dismissed claims that Members of Parliament (MPs) are bribed into accepting the nominees of the President.
The approval of some ministerial nominees was criticized because of what some describe as their poor showing during vetting.
The endorsement of minister-designates Ken Ofofi-Atta, Hawa Koomson, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto despite opposition further heightened concerns about possible palm greasing in the House.
But speaking to JoyNews’ Emefa Apawu, the Bekwai legislator said MPs only do their work.
“Unfortunately, we have become too corrupt as a country, nobody accepts that you can do something genuinely without thinking about your palm being greased or that you are being promised something.

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of interfering in Parliamentary businesses.
He described the development as “strange” and an affront to the course of deepening Ghana’s democratic credentials.

oyNews‘ Emefa Apawu, the Appointments Committee Chairman recounted how the opposition party instructed its members on the panel to fail about seven ministerial nominees prior to their vetting.
“For a party to sit outside and say that we will direct you on how to behave in Parliament is a strange development. At no point in time since I became an MP has my party called me to tell me that in this matter, we expect you to behave in this manner,” he said.

The Catholic Bishop of Wa, the Most Reverend Richard K. Baawobr, has urged Parliament to enact laws against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) life in the country.
He said Ghanaian customs and the church recognised marriage to be between a man and a woman and not between a man and a man or a woman and a woman, adding that “for the church, this is morally wrong, as it goes against the purpose of marriage”.
The Most Rev. Baawobr also reminded Parliament of the call by the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference not to concede to any external pressure to legalise LGBTQ in the country.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, not to be partisan.
He explained that although Mr Bagbin was an NDC member, his new position placed him above NDC issues.
“I believe that even though your position places you above partisanship, NDC is in your DNA and we cannot disengage you from the party that has nurtured you from being an MP to the position of speaker,” he stated.
