Dundee homeless numbers increase as country s figure shrinks

(Library image). Homelessness applications in Dundee rose by almost 10% last year despite an overall reduction being recorded in Scotland. Homelessness statistics published by the Scottish Government on Tuesday shows Dundee City area as one of only four local authorities to record an increase in homeless applications from 2019-20 and 2020-2021. While Scotland experienced a 9% drop overall in homeless applications, Dundee City Council area recorded a 9% increase. There was a 13% increase in those assessed homeless who had slept rough the night before in the same time period. Dundee also has 4% as a proportion of homeless in Scotland, but only 3% of the total population, providing a homeless rate of 8.9 – above the national average of 6.1

The Salvation Army spoke out as a survey of local councils it carried out revealed a £34 million “black hole” in their homeless budgets. That comes at the same time as 60% of the local authorities it surveyed said they were seeing an increase in demand for help with housing and homelessness in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sign Up A “shocking” rise in the number of homeless deaths across Tayside and Fife has sparked calls for more social housing to be made available. New figures from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) show there were 216 deaths  in 2019, about three times the figure for England and Wales. More than half (54%) were said to be drug-related. In Fife the numbers trebled in the space of a year, from six in 2018 to 15. There were nine deaths in Dundee City, up from six, and another six in Perth and Kinross. Two deaths were recorded in Angus, compared to none the year before.
