At a press conference near the lake on the Friday before Memorial Day 2020, David Brown, the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, announced the launch of the Summer Operations Center (SOC), a multiagency gun-violence prevention hub. Brown said the center had a singular mission: Reducing murders and shootings this summer.
But internal documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show that almost immediately after the SOC s creation, with the onset of citywide protests against racism and the police murder of George Floyd, the police department began using the violence-prevention center to monitor and share intelligence about political demonstrations. The police continued to use the SOC to surveil political organizing throughout the summer and fall even going so far as to quietly add protest monitoring to the center s stated mission.

A portion of Brummett s Creek Road near Unionville was blocked off by police Wednesday afternoon as officers investigated an incident where a man with a gun reportedly threatened to harm several people at his home.
At 3:45, the man exited the house and turned himself over to police who had surrounded the residence. The Critical Incident Response Team, specially trained for armed situations, was called to the scene. His roommate came out first and said the man was willing to come out, so the CIRT team got into position and called for him, and he came out, hands up and everything, Chief Deputy Russell Brummett said. It all ended well.

Kentucky State Police released limited information on a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened in Florence on Wednesday.
KSP said the United States Marshals Service asked their office to investigate an officer-involved shooting at which point the detectives with the Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene in Boone County.
Investigators with KSP said their preliminary findings indicate the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to execute multiple arrest warrants for someone who lived on Garden Drive in Florence.
When Marshals made contact with the suspect, the individual fired a weapon, according to KSP.
KSP said the individual was struck, and life-saving measures attempted by law enforcement were unsuccessful. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
