More details are emerging about NorthWestern Energy’s proposed gas-fired power plant near Laurel. At least 250 people would be needed for the construction of the 175-megawatt power plant, which the utility previously said would come online by start of 2024. The selected contractor for the project is Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co., Inc. of Kansas City, Missouri. “There will be significant jobs during the construction of the Laurel Generating Station with opportunities for Montanans for employment, as well as to provide services and supplies. At the peak of construction there is expected to be between 250 - 300 people working on the Laurel Generating Station,” said NorthWestern spokesperson Jo Dee Black in an email. “We anticipate and hope a significant portion of the work will be done by Montanans.”

Unusual clusters of coronavirus cases among already-vaccinated residents and patients at the Yountville Veterans Home and Napa State Hospital were the result of a West Coast variant of COVID-19, state and county officials confirmed in a joint statement this week. At least 49 cases were discovered among residents, patients and staff of the two facilities through the end of March, Napa County Public Health Officer Karen Relucio told the Register in an interview earlier this month. Though some of the staff members at each facility have chosen to remain unvaccinated, all of the infected residents and patients in question had previously been vaccinated, she said.
