COVID-19 vaccination commenced in Nigeria yesterday with frontline healthcare workers in Abuja taking the first shots from the first batch of AstraZeneca vaccines that arrived in the country last Tuesday.
The elaborate ceremony was held at the Trauma Centre, National Hospital, Abuja.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha kicked off the exercise on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The vaccination ceremony was graced by the Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, FCT Minister Mohammed Musa Bello, Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire and representatives of donor agencies. The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, was represented by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe.
A chieftain of the party, however, told Daily Trust that lack of funding was responsible for the delay in the commencement of the exercise.
“Funding is the main reason why the exercise has not commenced in Abuja. You know, we don’t have a governor, the FCT senator is a PDP member and the area council chairmen are battling to run the affairs of their councils.
“Here, the minister is the leader but he is not a core politician, hence no fund is provided.
“Stakeholders are now struggling to raise funds for it. Apart from the minister, nobody has revalidated or registered in Abuja. We are anxious and awaiting the commencement of the registration,” he said, pleading not to be named.

Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in a statement on Monday, accused “mischief authors” of concocting lies.
He said the Mess was built to cater for the welfare of Police officers, serve as transit accommodation for personnel on transfer or on special assignments and provide a social environment for their relaxation.
Mba noted that over time, the property has degenerated and shown structural defects requiring a massive renovation or outright rebuilding.
The spokesman said to restore its lost glory, the IGP and the Management Team took a decision to upgrade it “to a world-class edifice”.
Mba disclosed that the renovation will include the development of a world-class three-star hotel, office spaces for lease, and a shopping complex.
