KABUL: Taliban fighters have captured a key district in northern Afghanistan while thousands of civilians have fled their homes in the southern part of the country to escape violent attacks by the group after the withdrawal of US forces from a military base in the area, officials said on Wednesday.
The rugged Burka district in Baghlan, one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, fell to the Taliban overnight after the militant group staged an attack on government forces, Javid Basharat, a spokesman for Baghlan’s governor, told Arab News.
“I can confirm that the enemy has captured the Burka district as a result of an encounter. Security and defense forces tactically, without suffering any losses, withdrew and have plans to recapture it,” he added.

LAKKI MARWAT: A woman and a man were killed allegedly for honour in Bannu district on Saturday, the police said.
The incident occurred in Kotka Jumma Khan locality in the limits of the Saddar police station, the officials said, adding the husband of the woman shot her and a young man dead.
They said the police had recovered the bodies from the house of the accused.
The bodies of the woman and the 22-year-old man were shifted to the district headquarters hospital.
The police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the law and began investigation.
226 Killed in Taliban Attacks after US Withdrawal Announcement
An average of 11 to 49 soldiers and civilians have been killed in Taliban attacks in Afghanistan on a daily basis following the announcement of the withdrawal of US troops from the country on April 14, sources told TOLOnews on Friday.
According to statistics provided by sources, 226 Afghan civilians and military personnel have been killed in Taliban attacks in 24 provinces since April 15.
Of the figure, 69 are civilians and 157 are security force members.
Under the Doha agreement, the United States will officially start withdrawing their troops from Afghanistan on May 1. The process will be completed until September 11.
