A 26-year-old Haverhill man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after allegedly sideswiping a New Hampshire State Police cruiser early this morning on I-93 in Salem, N.H.

Haverhill Deputy Fire Chief Robert M. O’Brien will succeed William F. Laliberty as fire chief.
O’Brien was appointed by Mayor James J. Fiorentini and has already been asked to hire women and recruit minorities. He is scheduled to be sworn in during a ceremony Monday morning at the Water Street Fire Station. The mayor said he believes O’Brien will continue the progress on upgrading fire stations, replacing fire trucks and other equipment and lifting firefighter morale.
“After spending many hours in interviews, I am confident that Deputy Chief Robert O’Brien has the necessary skill set to continue this progress and move the department forward. He is already familiar with every man in the department, and with the fire plans for every large building in the city. He is ready to go on day one. Patrolman Guy Cooper.
Haverhill Patrolman Guy Cooper has formed a committee as a first step toward seeking the mayor’s job during this fall’s local elections.
The Cooper Committee was formed last Wednesday, according to records on file with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance. Cooper would become the second officer in recent years to seek the corner office in City Hall. In 2019, Patrolman Daniel Trocki unsuccessfully challenged Mayor James J. Fiorentini. Trocki earned a respectable 4,785 votes to Fiorentini’s 6,503, and the mayor went on to win an unprecedented ninth term.
The mayor told WHAV he has not decided whether to re-election this year. He said he doesn’t expect to make any announcements until April or May.
