Persons who consumed dead fish that washed ashore must report for monitoring – Fisheries Minister

+ Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has appealled to persons who might have consumed the suspected poisoned fish which spilled on the Osu beach to report themselves for monitoring. In what may be described as her first public response on the suspected poisoned fishes, Madam Koomson said three state institutions, the FDA, Fisheries Commission and the EPA have been tasked to unravel the cause of the spill. “…as we speak they have taken samples and are investigating. We are not out with any information for now, and so we wouldn’t want to say anything that is out of order. We want to wait for information before stating facts.”

Cooperate With Fish Death Investigations - Hawa Koomson Appeals

  The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson has asked fisher folks at Osu in the Klotey Korle Municipality in the Greater Accra Region to cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigations to ascertain the reasons behind the death of the fishes who have washed ashore on Friday. She said it was important for some examination to be conducted to establish the wholesomeness or otherwise of the fishes before the public consumed it. She also appealed to individuals who had consumed some of the fishes to avail themselves to be placed under medical surveillance. The Minister made the appeal at a stakeholder durbar at Osu Anorho in Accra yesterday.

13 species of dead fish counted by investigators at Ghana beaches

Graphic Online BY: Enoch Darfah Frimpong 705 Investigators have so far identified 13 different species of fish from the shoal that washed ashore dead or weak, including what is believed to be dolphins at different coasts of Ghana. It was at the Osu Castle beach where the first dead fish stock were spotted on Good Friday, April 2, 2021 followed by the ones at Axim-Bewire in the Western Region on Sunday, April 4, 2021. The authorities in Ghana are trying to find out what caused the over 120 dolphins to wash up at the Axim-Bewire beach and the different species of fish at the Osu Castle beach.
