(KOLN) - Hy-Vee announced on Friday that all Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations throughout Nebraska will participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 24. According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , more than 87,200 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses, primarily related to opioids, in a 12-month period from September 2019 to September 2020, with the largest increase in deaths occurring in April and May 2020 right after the COVID-19 pandemic began. Since 2019, drug take-back receptacles have been available inside all Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations year-round to provide customers a secure place to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired drugs in communities throughout the Midwest and remove them from the environment. With opioid overdose deaths increasing during the pandemic, the Drug Task Force, Bowling Green Police, Kentucky State Police, and Warren County Sheriff are holding its 20th Take Back Day on Saturday, April 24th in conjunction with the DEA national initiative. DEA’s October 2020. Take Back Day brought in a record-high amount of expired, unused prescription medications, with the public turning in close to 500 tons of unwanted drugs. Over the 10-year span of Take Back Day, DEA has brought in more than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs. With studies indicating a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets, clearing out unused medicine is essential.
