It is May 6, and – well over a year into a global pandemic that has impacted every member of the Staten Island community – it is time to pause for National Nurses Day 2021, part of this year’s nurse appreciation week.
It is difficult to send our thoughts back to last spring, when New York City was the epicenter of an emerging global pandemic, PPE was in short supply, the hospital beds were full, and morgues were working overtime to manage those who did not survive.

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Downtown Jonesboro was vibrant all day long Saturday, as local artists, musicians, restaurants, and more flooded the streets to celebrate the Oasis Arts and Eats Festival.
The festival lasted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Anyone could walk around and browse the stalls set up by artists and businesses.
Tickets were also sold for visitors to sample foods from restaurants like The Recovery Room and Que 49.
The event was sponsored by organizations like the Foundation of Arts and the Jonesboro Radio Group, helping to lend artists a hand in selling and promoting their creations.

This week s edition of The Local Flavor features Bert Surrell and his restaurant 60 years young: Surrell s Pizza & Pub. Bert and his wife, Kristy, both grew up in families with restaurant experience. Bert s grandfather had opened Surrell s Pizza & Pub, and Bert s father went on to open other restaurants in the area.
It was after his father passed away and Bert developed his restaurant experience that he would come to own the family business. With the help of Kristy, his children, his staff, and most importantly, his community, Bert continues to run Surrell s Pizza & Pub.
