Great Western Railway train (Image: Network Rail) PLANS for a new railway station on the Somerset Levels have taken a big step forward after district councillors agreed funding for a feasibility study. Somerton and Langport were both served by trains on the line between Taunton and Castle Cary before their stations were closed in the mid-1960s during the Beeching cuts. Chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak MP singled out the two towns in his 2020 spending review, stating the government could provide up to £50,000 towards a study into restoring rail services to the local area. South Somerset District Council has now agreed to provide a further £6,000 on top of contributions from town and parish councils – meaning the study can officially begin.
