On Wednesday, March 17, AB Ellis Public School teacher Jennifer Tilston announced on Facebook that the school had received a WWF – Canada Go Wild School Grant to create a pollinator garden to help protect some of the butterflies, bees and other insects native to this area. She said her Grade 3 class is very excited about the project, but will need to wait until it is warm enough to begin planting.
Every year, the World Wildlife Fund Canada awards Go Wild grants of $500 – $1,000 to schools at the Kindergarten to Grade 12 level and 10 grants to post-secondary students and campuses. This year, they have given grants to 100 schools. Their website says since 2015 they have funded 369 Go Wild school and campus projects, which encompass growing native plant gardens, building bat boxes, monitoring local wildlife, restoring creeks and raising awareness about conservation issues. Three people from Espanola were charged with drug-related offences after police seized more than $20,000 in suspected fentanyl, cocaine and crystal meth during a drug bust last month.
Members of the Manitoulin OPP assisted the Crime Unit, the Crime Enforcement Bureau and the OPP’s North East Community Street Crime Unit to execute a search warrant at a residence on Mead Boulevard at about 8:40 p.m.
