Two Greens MEPs on fact-finding mission in Slovenia next week 10. June, 2021 Brussels – Two members of the European Parliament from the Greens-European Free Alliance group will be in Slovenia next week for a fact-finding mission ahead of Slovenia’s presidency of the Council of the EU. The Germans Daniel Freund and Sergey Lagodinsky will be in Slovenia from next Tuesday to Thursday, Lagodinsky’s office has confirmed for the STA, adding that they would be accompanied by another German Greens party member, Franziska Brantner. According to the announcement, the purpose of the visit is a fact-finding mission as Slovenia is assuming the rotating six-month presidency of the Council in the second half of the year.

June, 2021 London – Several international journalist organisations condemned Wednesday Prime Minister Janez JanÅ¡a’s tweet that said Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović was “part of #fakenews network”. This came after her warning about deteriorating media freedom in Slovenia. The organisations agree with her assessment of the situation. “We welcome a memorandum by Commissioner Mijatović and share her concern over the deterioration of media freedom in Slovenia, which coincides with findings of our recent fact-finding mission in the country,” said Article 19, the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the International Press Institute (IPI), Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and OBC Transeuropa.

'Bulgaria interim government must prioritise media freedom'

Six media associations have written to Bulgaria’s caretaker government to urge it to prioritise the improvement of media freedom in the country and the investigation of serious threats and attacks on journalists. Addressed to caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev, Interior Minister Boiko Rashkov and Culture Minister Velislav Minekov, the letter, announced on June 9, was signed by the Association of European Journalists Bulgaria, Article 19, the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, Free Press Unlimited, International Press Institute and OBC Transeuropa. The letter was coordinated by the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide mechanism which tracks, monitors and responds to violations of press and media freedom in EU member states and candidate countries.
