For some, the apology may have come too late.
The concern was brought up as early as December 2020, said Chad Goldberg, a sociology professor at UW-Madison. At the time, the university said it was too late to make changes.
However, according to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, two of the largest school districts in Wisconsin, Milwaukee Public Schools and Madison Metropolitan Schools, changed their start dates to accommodate Rosh Hashana.
Goldberg said he does appreciate the statement from the chancellor, but he wishes that there was permission for faculty members to simply cancel classes on the first day, if necessary.
UW-Madison students had been gathering signatures for a letter to administration condemning the university’s decision.
