Canada border reopens, US extends restrictions: What we know

The restrictions limit land entry into the U.S. for nonessential travelers, including tourists or those seeking to attend events in Canada, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  The Department of Homeland Security, in conjunction with its Canadian and Mexican counterparts, first closed the United States borders to leisure travelers in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The restrictions have been extended on a monthly basis ever since. Despite continued vaccination efforts in both Canada and the U.S., where 68.8% and 56.2% of each respective country s population has received at least one dose of a vaccine, limitations have been extended due to risks posed by new variants and continued risk of human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus.

Urban beekeeping grows in Detroit with land bank deal

Detroit is humming with the buzz of a growing population keeping the city alive and green. Atop unsuspecting skyscrapers, in the back of eateries and community centers throughout the city are hives that are home to tens of thousands of bees placed by urban beekeeping initiative Bees in the D. In six years, the nonprofit has grown to more than 200 hives across southeast Michigan spanning from Armada to Monroe, Dexter to Grosse Pointe. “As it appears that our climate is changing quite a bit, I think (urban beekeeping is) very important because Detroit has been a food desert for so many years, and it s really important that we start looking back at our basics of how to grow our own food and to create an environment where we coexist with nature, because as things change, we may need to change our behaviors as well,” said Bees in the D co-founder Brian Peterson-Roest.
