VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela and enterprise minister Miriam Dalli announced a new 20 million aid package for businesses hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Abela said the packagès objectives are to assist businesses in paying rent, utility bills and covering other costs and to incentivise investment and growth.
Dalli augured that the direct support measures intended to inject liquidity and the incentives aimed at stimulating economic activity will in the long-term encourage companies to adopt sustainable business models.
The 20 million aid package include an extension of rent schemes by 50% over and above assistance provided in 2020; the electricity support scheme, subsidising 50% of bills, will be re-issued covering June – August 2021; a 1,000 grant for businesses that will remain closed after 10 May; a restart incentive scheme that will cover advisory costs up to 5,000 and up to 10,000 to support implementation of new business

A miserly democracy is a miserable one; robust democracies cost money. A representative democracy is living a lie if half its population only features as 15 per cent of its House of Representatives.
I like the aim of the gender parity bill, passed last week, and I’m unbothered by its expense. It introduces a mechanism that kicks into effect at the next general election. It’s expected to add a dozen women MPs (six Labour, six Nationalist) above the 65 MPs elected according to the usual procedure.
But I don’t think we’re being given the underlying story straight.
Ramona Attard, the president of the Labour Party, says that, had the bill not passed, we would have seen a repeat – in terms of women elected to parliament – of the 2017 general election. But the total proportion of women MPs is not the whole story of that election.

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli has launched new schemes aimed at encouraging more families to invest in renewable energy and to reduce their energy bills.
The three schemes launched today will allow consumers to switch from the conventional geyser to more efficient water heaters, thus saving a considerable amount of electricity and allowing households to heat water in an efficient and environmentally sustainable way.
