A new national coalition that includes some of North Carolina’s largest school districts says integrating public schools offers a divided nation hope for racial equity and equal opportunity. For Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, a 2022 student assignment review will provide a chance to try new diversity strategies.
The October debut of the Bridges Collaborative was mostly overshadowed by the pandemic. The group was convened by The Century Foundation, a self-described progressive think tank headquartered in New York and Washington, D.C. We were hearing calls from folks around the country who were saying, ‘Look, we see segregation as a big issue. We see it as part of this broader conversation our country is having right now around systemic racial injustice. Last Friday, the state’s Education Practices Commission agreed when Loftis, who has a master’s degree in public administration, went before the members to fight to get his job back. Some voiced their support.
“They re aren t that many teachers with master’s degrees, there aren’t that many teachers that can bring the experiences that he’s had in his life – forget the six years of his porn past,” Loftis said.
The reversal will allow Loftis to pursue a teaching certificate. He has already passed the exam, so now all he needs is a teaching job.

Nearly 1-point-1-billion in new federal stimulus funding expected to come to Miami-Dade Public Schools, and the district vows to do a better job spending this money than it did with prior pandemic aid. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho wants to use input from teachers, staffers and the community. Carvalho s goal is to have 100-percent of students in-person learning this upcoming academic year. He s reconvened his public health task force of medical experts to see how best to do that without mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for staff or students.
