The tight contest for the overall lead of the 2021 Rolex 24 At Daytona was as spirited as predicted 12 hours into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season opener as it was at the drop of the green flag.
And at the midpoint of the race, a familiar name was showing the way.
Filipe Albuquerque had the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing/Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 DPi out front, holding the No. 48 Action Express/Ally Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R and Mike Rockenfeller off by less than a second with Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kevin Magnussen and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, in the pole-winning No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac, giving chase.
Making Sense Out of the 5 IMSA Classes at the Rolex 24 at Daytona
Unless you happen to be a diehard, dedicated fan, multi-class racing can be a bit confusing.

Five classes of cars will compete on track at the same time at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, January 30-31 at Daytona International Speedway.
The DPis have the drivers who may be the most familiar, including NASCAR seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, current NASCAR Cup champ Chase Elliott, perennial IndyCar champ Scott Dixon, and fresh-from-Formula 1 Kevin Magnussen.
GT Daytona is the largest class with 19 entries, which are easily confused with GTLM cars, but it’s easy to memorize the six GTLM cars.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It wasn’t the typical path to the front of the pack, but Oliver Jarvis will take it.
Driving the No. 55 Mazda Motorsports Mazda DPi, Jarvis was second fastest in qualifications Saturday at Daytona International Speedway for Sunday’s Motul Pole Award 100 – the qualifying race that will determine the starting order for the Rolex 24 At Daytona on January 30-31.
Wayne Taylor Racing Hangs Rolex 24 Three-Peat Hopes on Dream Driver Lineup, Acura
Team owner welcomes three superstars with plenty of Acura experience to Rolex party.
Wayne Taylor Racing is going for its third consecutive Rolex 24 at Daytona overall victory.
This year s team is WTR s first with Acura. The team s three previous Rolex wins have come with Cadillac.
Taylor s driver lineup for this year s Rolex includes Indy 500 winners Helio Castroneves and Alexander Rossi, along with past Rolex winners Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque.
Wayne Taylor will never be accused of resting on his laurels.
