Three Dorset schools confirm Covid-19 cases as people must self-isolate until Christmas Eve

THREE more schools in Dorset have reported coronavirus cases this week before the Christmas break. Sturminster Newton High School, which has more than 600 students, confirmed in a letter to parents and carers that a “member of our school community has tested positive for Covid-19 . The affected person and any close contacts must self-isolate until Christmas Eve. Jason Davis, headteacher at the Bath Road school, wrote that while the news would “naturally create concern”, he reassured parents and students that there are “rigorous measures to protect students .

Refectory set to be created in former Minster School

The former Minster School, where a refectory may now be created YORK Minster has unveiled plans to open a new refectory, ticket and box office in parts of the former Minster School, following its closure earlier this year. The proposals are included in a revised York Minster Neighbourhood Plan, which is going out to a final public consultation. Alex McCallion, director of works and precinct at the cathedral, said that since the original plan was launched in 2018, the coronavirus pandemic had had a significant impact both on the schedule for the consultation process and on the proposals. The process has been on hold since March 2020 in light of the Covid-19 crisis, a key consequence of which has been the closure of the Minster School, he said

But it’s been a tough year for choristers, with lockdowns and tier restrictions hampering their work.  Three leading cathedral choirs, Canterbury, York Minster and Salisbury, reveal how they’re still bringing us festive cheer, and reflect on why the choral tradition is such a vital part of our Christmas season.  Canterbury Cathedral “People have sung here for more than a thousand years,” points out Canterbury Cathedral’s master of choristers, Dr David Flood. “We are proud to have kept it going, in difficult circumstances.” The first lockdown meant that the two choirs – girls and boys, aged 8 to 13 – could only communicate virtually. “It’s tough rehearsing over Zoom, because of the digital lag,” explains Flood. “You can’t hear one another.”
