JBS Reaches Settlement in Pork Antitrust Lawsuit

Tunheim of the Minnesota District Court filed an Order on Wednesday granting  preliminary approval to a $24.5 million settlement between JBS and members of the direct purchaser class in a putative class-action lawsuit claiming that members of the pork industry artificially raised prices.  This settlement relates to plaintiffs who purchased pork directly from the plaintiff, there are other classes involved in the case including those who purchased pork at inflated prices from other companies.  The agreement between JBS and the plaintiffs also requires the defendant to cooperate with the plaintiffs. The judge said that the settlement agreement “falls within the range of possible approval.” Although the agreement is still subject to consideration at a fairness hearing, Judge Tunheim said it was “fair, reasonable, adequate, and in the best interests of the Settlement Class.”

Prospective jurors in George Floyd s murder trial were sent a 16-page questionnaire asking how many times they watched the video of his death, it has been revealed. They were asked if they took part in Black Lives Matter protests in the questionnaire filed to Minnesota District Court Tuesday. Four former Minneapolis Police officers accused of contributing to Floyd s death on May 25 are up for trial in three months. The trial of Derek Chauvin, 44, Thomas Lane, 37, J. Alexander Kueng, 26, and Tou Thao, 34, is scheduled for March 2021.  Revelations about the trial s questionnaire come after Judge Peter Cahill upheld his decision to livestream the trial last Friday.

George Floyd trial: Court sends BLM, police questionnaire to jurors

Prospective jurors in the George Floyd trial are being asked about their views on Black Lives Matter, policing and criminal justice as they re being considered for the upcoming criminal trial in Minnesota District Court.  The 16-page document also asks potential jurors about this year s protests that demanded justice in wake of killings of Black Americans  including Floyd, a Black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee against Floyd s neck for more than eight minutes while Floyd said he couldn t breathe. Chauvin faces second-degree unintentional murder and manslaughter charges. Three officers who were also present when Floyd died in May J. Alexander Kueng, Tou Thao and Thomas Lane are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.
