Toronto s iconic Yonge Street is officially getting a makeover through the downtown core thanks to a 21-5 city council vote in favour of YongeTOmorrow; an ambitious plan that will restrict vehicular traffic along parts of the major street for more pedestrian, cyclist, event and green space.
Revamping the major arterial route is something city officials have been discussing and working on for years ten years, according to councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam. The motion has been seconded by Mayor John Tory.
“We all know that Dufferin Street is one of the most heavily travelled roadways, not only in our community but across the city,” Bailao wrote. “It is used daily by buses, cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles, all of which are sharing a relatively small roadway.
“Cycling and pedestrian safety is a paramount concern which requires further expedited attention as various reviews are ongoing with respect to improving safety and public transit movement on Dufferin Street.”
