The first-ever joint convention of the Colorado Press Association and Kansas Press Association is scheduled for this Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21. Once again, it will be a virtual convention. Over the two days, participants will be able to network with peers across the state and into a neighboring state, share ideas and learn from industry experts to produce better journalism, build more innovative and sustainable businesses and contribute to stronger and more informed communities.

By Jef Rietsma Journal Correspondent A boost in broadband coverage countywide appears to be high on a wish-list being compiled by county officials. The topic was addressed Tuesday at the county board of commissioners meeting. St. Joseph County is expected to receive close to $12 million as part of the federal government’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Earlier in the day, commissioner Jared Hoffmaster discussed the matter with officials from several townships and municipalities, as part of a government-relations committee meeting.  “They were talking about partnering with the county, and I think they’re talking to (county administrator Teresa Doehring) about the American Rescue Plan money and doing some broadband expansion in our county,” Hoffmaster said. “I’m not sure if that’s in our strategic plan or not, but I’m going to have to take a look at that.”

Heartland attendees receive fundamental economic development training on topics ranging from quality of life, business and development funding, site selection, business retention and expansion, and workforce development.   This training opportunity was made possible through a donation from Midwest Energy Inc. “Midwest understands the importance of economic development to the region’s vitality, specifically when it comes to site selection and utility availability,” Cooper stated. “Collaboration is critical to sustainability and fosters public-private partnerships, and we are grateful for their continual investment in our area.”
