Oliver named Syracuse Chief of Police

SYRACUSE Michael Oliver has been named the new Chief of Police in the Village of Syracuse.
“I will serve and protect the residents of Syracuse with the best of my ability and will continue to grow the current relationships and community involvement from our department,” said Oliver of his message to residents of the village.
Oliver, who has been with the Syracuse Police Department since August 2016, will replaced former Chief Mony Wood who stepped down from the position earlier this month. Wood was recently named Chief of the Middleport Police Department.

MIDDLEPORT On Jan. 15, the Middleport Police Department received a call from law enforcement in Anderson, Indiana, who advised they were actively looking for and had a felony warrant for Zackary Custer, 29, of Middleport.
Officers went to his last known addressed and advised he was not home at the time. Custer later walked into the Middleport Police Department and turned himself in without incident.
A fugitive of justice warrant was completed for Meigs County Court and Madison County Sheriff of Indiana was notified. Custer awaits arraignment in the Middleport Jail.
On Jan. 18, Middleport Police were called and advised that William Eric Hayes, 47, of Brownell Avenue was allegedly screaming inside his apartment and may have a gun.

MIDDLEPORT Mony Wood has been named the new Chief of Police in the Village Middleport following the retirement of Chief Bruce Swift.
Wood was officially named to the position during Monday’s Council meeting.
Wood began working with the Middleport Police Department in 2007 when he joined the department to help with the reopening of a jail facility.
”Middleport has been a great place to work for me and as Chief I plan to continue to work with the citizens of Middleport , the council and the mayor,” Wood told the Sentinel. “I ran for Sheriff and lost but I think God had a bigger and better plan for me and that was to stay in Middleport.”
One in custody following alleged altercation where gunshot fired

POMEROY One man is in custody, while law enforcement continues to look for another man believed to be injured following an altercation on Saturday afternoon.
Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood reported in a news release, that his office received a call at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in reference to an altercation that took place on Bradbury Road.
According to the news release, the altercation took place between Buford W. Smallwood Jr., age 34, from Vinton and Levi McGrath, age 39, of Athens.
“Witnesses state that a fight had occurred between the two men when allegedly a weapon was produced by Smallwood and a shot was fired at McGrath. McGrath fled the scene and upon officers arriving at the scene, Smallwood fled on a motorcycle and officers pursued until losing site of Smallwood near the Gallia County line on Titus Road,” according to the release.
