Butler County HIV cases: Cases up 700% from the same time last year

Updated: 7:54 AM EDT Apr 29, 2021 WLWT Digital Staff WLWT Digital Staff Butler County health officials are sharing information on prevention programs after the county saw a 700% increase in cases of HIV, compared to the same time last year.Officials say the increase is attributed to cases among people who inject drugs. While this represents just eight new cases, the percent increase is alarming and something we need to understand so we can implement prevention tactics, says Jackie Phillips Carter, Middletown Health Commissioner.Butler County officials say they have two sites for its bloodborne infectious disease prevention program in Fairfield (behind Mercy Fairfield Hospital) and Middletown (1300 Reynolds Ave.) As the grantee for HIV remediation in Southwest Ohio, we are working closely with Butler County and the cities of Hamilton and Middletown to monitor the situation and provide support for reducing cases, says Hamilton County Health Commission

COVID-19 vaccinations start Wednesday for Middletown City Schools staff About 500 educators and employees to receive first doses WCPO and last updated 2021-02-08 19:24:11-05 MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — Starting Wednesday morning, the City of Middletown Health Department will administer the first doses of Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine to about 500 Middletown City School District teachers and staff. According to a release sent Monday, MCSD is the first school district in Ohio to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. “Planning with MCSD to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to all interested staff began immediately after Governor DeWine first announced plans to have schools back in-person by March 1, 2021,” said Middletown Health Commissioner Jackie Phillips Carter in the release. “This timeline allows the second dose of the vaccine to be administered prior to that start date.”

Middletown teachers and staff members received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Teachers, bus drivers, and custodial members arrived Wednesday with their sleeves rolled and ready up to get the vaccine. “It’s really exciting because I’m around all the kids all day long,” says Custodial Manager John Thompson. “I’m in and out of every school all day long, and I’ve got 40 people that work for me. So, I feel kind of proud that I’m doing this.”
