As Michigan COVID vaccine rates ebb, pop up clinics and casino cash appear

That may mean that mass vaccination clinics and drive-throughs will soon fade, giving way to pop-up clinics at neighborhood centers, high schools, churches and mosques, or being offered a vaccine at a doctor’s office during a routine visit. “We ve kind of hit all those people who wanted it, who were fighting to get their vaccines, who were jumping in front of everyone else,” said Sarah Oleniczak, deputy health officer at District Health Department, which covers 10 central Michigan counties. “Now we can take a breath and we can go off-site.” Getting Michigan to herd immunity by having at least 70 percent of its population vaccinated or otherwise immune won’t be easy. Few thought it would be. The strategy now shifts to a more arduous ground game into the nooks and crannies of Michigan.

No new restrictions, but Michigan needs help amid COVID surge, Gov Gretchen Whitmer says

The calls were suggestions, however, and not mandates sought by some health experts as cases soar and hospital beds fill amid Michigan’s third coronavirus wave. “This is a team effort. It s on all of us to do our part by masking up and getting vaccinated to protect ourselves and our families, so we can get back to normal,” Whitmer said. “Let’s get it done.” Whitmer also asked the administration of President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat, to send Michigan more doses of the coronavirus vaccines, a request that has not been accepted.  Instead, she said the White House offered more therapeutic supplies, personnel and other things but not additional vaccines.

Stateside: Primary doctors and COVID vaccines; kid podcaster; pandemic s toll on youth mental health

Stateside s conversation with Dr. Sheila Marcus Michigan, like most of the country, is in desperate need of more child and adolescent psychiatrists. A study released in February found that one in seven children in Michigan – more than 100,000 children in total – have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or ADHD, which are the three most common psychiatric disorders in people under the age of 18.  The state had a total of just 239 psychiatrists trained to treat children and adolescents in 2017, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. That works out to just 11 psychiatrists for every 100,000 children across the state. © 2021 Michigan Radio
