In their earliest, humblest days – back when they were working out of a basement in Akron, Ohio, with two microphones and an eight-track tape recorder – The Black Keys were already writing phenomenal original songs.
Their 2002 debut, “The Big Come Up,” had a bunch of them: “Your Man,” “Heavy Soul” and “Countdown” are all classics cherished by the rock duo’s longtime fans.
But when frontman Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney were sequencing “Come Up,” they began the album by tipping their hat to two legendary Mississippi bluesmen. Opener “Busted” adopted a lick from R.L. Burnside’s “Skinny Woman,” and was followed by a cover of “Do The Rump” by Junior Kimbrough.

The Black Keys are back with a new video for the single, “Crawling Kingsnake.” The song is a cover of the 1920s Delta blues song, “Crawling King Snake.” The blues song was famously covered by John Lee Hooker in 1949, who reimagined Big Joe Williams’ country-blues version from 1941.
“I first heard [John Lee] Hooker’s version in high school,” guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach said in a statement. “My uncle Tim would have given me that record. But our version is definitely Junior Kimbrough’s take on it. It’s almost a disco riff!”
The Black Keys Celebrate Mississippi Hill Country Blues With New Album Delta Kream
On May 14, The Black Keys release their tenth studio album, Delta Kream, via Nonesuch Records. The record celebrates the band s roots, featuring eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded Delta Kream at Auerbach s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville; they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. The album takes its name from William Eggleston s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover. Delta Kream is available for pre-order on all formats here.

Mississippi Today is a strictly non-profit, web-based news organization that brands itself as the political watchdog of the state.
With the Republican party holding a super majority in the state’s elected offices, Mississippi Today often receives criticism as left leaning. While the organization is nonpartisan, it must cover a heavily partisan government.

TUPELO ⢠Jim Weatherly was more than a songwriter to Gladys Knight. They were musical contemporaries who achieved success at the same time and whose careers paralleled each other.
Knight and her group, the Pips, rose to fame in the early 1970s by singing tunes written by Weatherly â especially the memorable âMidnight Train To Georgia.â She was among many who expressed her adoration for the Pontotoc native and celebrated songwriter, who passed away Wednesday.
âIâm missing Jim Weatherly already,â Knight wrote Thursday on Twitter. âHe was about life and love. â¦. We were just made for each other. We grew our lives together. Iâm gonna miss him terribly and love him always.â
