Municipal elections are just around the corner and the number of elected police chiefs in Mississippi dropped by nearly 20 percent in recent months.
In November, the Houston Board of Aldermen voted to make its top cop position appointed. Earlier this month, the aldermen in Forest, located in Scott County, did the same thing.
There are 275 police chiefs across the state, according to the Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police. Of that total, there are now just nine (3.2 percent) who are elected. The remaining elected police chief positions are in Aberdeen, Amory, Baldwyn, Brookhaven, Corinth, Iuka, Nettleton, New Albany and Okolona.

PERKINSTON, Miss. (MGCCC Athletics) - Legendary Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College player and coach George Sekul, whose Bulldogs teams won two national titles and more than 200 games, died Monday at home in DâIberville surrounded by his family. He was 83.
âCoach Sekul is probably the best-known coach in Gulf Coast history and has made a huge impact on the lives of former players, current students and employees of this institution,â said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president. âHis legacy is one of athletic excellence, outstanding coaching skill and whole-hearted devotion to both MGCCC and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. President-elect Joe Bidenâs choice of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as his U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary should bode well for Mississippi farmers whose agriculture production value was $7.35 billion in 2020.
As a former mayor, state legislator, governor, and dairy industry advocate, Vilsack brings a wealth of experience to the job. He served eight years as the head of USDA during the administration of President Barack Obama. The Biden appointment will position Vilsack to become the second longest-serving USDA secretary since fellow Iowan James Wilson headed the agency from 1897 to 1913.
Vilsack, 69, is no stranger to Mississippi.
During his prior tenure at the helm of USDA, Vilsack toured the devastation of the 2011 F5 tornado that slammed Smithville and other Mississippi and Alabama communities.
